Door Types in Northamptonshire and Rushden

Door types for every kind of opening

Different parts of a house need different doors. A wall of glass folding onto the garden does a different job to a fire-rated entrance for a flat or a wide French opening onto a patio. Most homeowners we work with end up needing a mix of types across a property.

The Homeefe range covers bi-fold doors, French doors, patio doors, stable doors, fire doors and porch installations, each built to the same security and weather performance standards we apply across the range. Every door is made to measure, fitted by our FENSA-registered team across an 80 km radius of the Rushden showroom, and backed by a 10-year guarantee.

Door types we install

Here’s a quick overview of what each type does and where it tends to fit.

Bi-fold doors

Bi-fold doors are made for wide openings that connect indoor and outdoor spaces. The aluminium frames fold back to one side in concertina sections, opening up the full width of a wall onto a garden, patio or extension. We fit Cortizo bi-fold doors with 55 mm slim sightlines, double or triple glazing, and configurations covering 2 to 6 panels up to 8 m wide. PAS 24 multi-point locking comes standard.

French doors

A more traditional way to open a wall onto a garden or patio. French doors are hinged double doors, usually with full-length glazing in each leaf. Our uPVC French doors come with multi-point locking, laminated security glass, optional sidelights and the choice of inward or outward opening. They suit period properties where bi-folds would look out of place.

Patio doors

Sliding patio doors give you the largest single panel of glass available in the range. VEKA inline sliding profiles run on precision tracks so the door glides smoothly even at full weight. Double or triple glazed, with acoustic glass options for homes near busy roads, and low aluminium thresholds for step-through access.

Stable doors

A composite stable door splits horizontally into two sections, so you can open the top half for airflow while keeping the bottom locked. Useful for back entrances with children or pets, kitchens that get hot in summer, or anywhere you want ventilation without leaving the house wide open. Available in woodgrain or smooth finishes, with dual-colour options.

Fire doors

Fire doors are a legal requirement in flats, HMO properties and protected escape routes. Our FD30 composite fire doors are tested to BS EN 1634, with PAS 24 hardware, self-closing devices and EI-rated glazing where required. Specified properly, they buy 30 minutes of fire resistance to allow safe escape.

Porches

A porch adds shelter, storage and street appeal to the front of the house. Our uPVC porch installations use VEKA steel-reinforced profiles with double or triple glazing for A-rated thermal efficiency. The build is FENSA-certified throughout.

How to choose the right door type

The choice usually comes down to a few practical questions.

  • Where the door is going. Front and back exterior doors are different from internal doors or specialist openings. Composite or uPVC handle most front and back installations, with hybrid doors for contemporary properties.
  • How wide the opening is. For openings over 2.5 m wide, bi-fold or sliding patio doors are the only realistic options. Below that, French doors work well, and standard single doors handle widths up to about 1 m.
  • Security and compliance. Look for PAS 24 and Secured by Design on external doors. Fire doors need FD30 rating and BS EN 1634 testing for compliance in HMO and flat properties.
  • Energy and noise. Double glazing is standard. Triple glazing makes a noticeable difference if you’re near a busy road or on an exposed elevation. Acoustic glass is available on patio doors for extra noise reduction.
  • Property type. Period properties usually suit French doors, stable doors or traditional panelled compositions. New builds and contemporary renovations tend to favour bi-fold doors or hybrid front doors with slim sightlines.

What you get with every Homeefe door installation

The build quality and process stay consistent across every door type in the range.

Made to measure means we don’t fit standard sizes into oversized openings or pad gaps with silicone. Every door is built to the exact dimensions of the opening, with frame, threshold and glazing specified to the property.

Security comes with multi-point locking as standard, 3-Star cylinders on external doors, and PAS 24 plus Secured by Design certification available on most types. FENSA registration covers the installation itself, which means the work is certified for building regulations without local council involvement.

Energy efficiency is built in through modern glazing and warm-edge spacer bars that reduce condensation around the frame edges. Most door types achieve A-rated thermal performance with double glazing, and triple glazing pushes further for exposed positions or homes prioritising noise reduction.

Our installation process

The process stays the same regardless of which door type you choose.

We come out for a free home survey to take measurements and talk through your colour and glazing options. We follow up with a fixed itemised quote and no hidden extras. Installation is typically a one-day job for most door types, with the same team handling removal of the old door, the new fit, sealing and disposal.

Door installation across Northamptonshire and beyond

We fit doors across an 80 km radius of Rushden, including Northampton, Wellingborough, Kettering, Bedford, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Peterborough, Corby, Daventry, Higham Ferrers, Irthlingborough, Raunds, Towcester, St Neots, Rugby, Luton, Leicester and Hemel Hempstead. Coverage varies slightly by door type because of crew and vehicle requirements, but most types are available across the full area.

Supply-only delivery is available UK-wide if you’ve got your own installer lined up for any door type in the range.

Door Type FAQs

Do I need planning permission to replace doors?

Usually not. Like-for-like door replacements don't need planning permission. You may need it if you're in a conservation area, listed building, or if you're adding a new opening rather than replacing an existing door.

Which is better for wide openings: bi-fold or sliding patio doors?

It depends on what you prioritise. Bi-fold doors give the widest fully clear opening when folded back, with the trade-off of more frames when closed. Sliding patio doors give larger uninterrupted glass panels with slimmer sightlines, but only half the opening clears when the door is fully open.

Are uPVC doors less secure than composite or aluminium?

Not when properly specified. uPVC, composite and aluminium can all meet PAS 24 and Secured by Design with the right hook locking, hinges and 3-Star cylinders. The headline material matters less than the security spec inside the door.

What U-values should I aim for?

For a new front door, look for 1.4 W/m²K or lower. New build regulations require 1.6 or lower depending on construction. Our composite doors hit 0.86 W/m²K and hybrid doors start at 0.84 W/m²K, with triple glazing pushing further on glazed door types.

Can I match colours inside and out?

Yes. Dual-colour finishes are available on most door types in the range, so you can have one colour outside and a different one inside.

How long does it take from initial enquiry to fitted door?

Typical lead times run 4 to 8 weeks depending on door type and spec. Bi-fold doors are around 4 weeks. Composite and hybrid doors run 5 to 8 weeks. The installation itself is usually a one-day job once the door arrives.
