Composite stable doors that bring back something traditional
A stable door is one of those features that sounds old-fashioned until you live with one. The ability to open just the top half on a warm afternoon, letting in light and air while keeping pets indoors and toddlers from wandering into the garden, is the kind of practical detail that no standard back door can match.
We design and install composite stable doors across Northamptonshire from our Rushden showroom. Built with a 44 mm GRP-skinned composite leaf, multi-point Winkhaus or Yale locking, and U-values from 0.86 W/m²K, they hit the same thermal and security standards as the rest of our composite range, with the added flexibility of the split-leaf design.
Back doors take heavy daily use and rarely benefit from the protection of a covered porch. Our composite stable doors are built around that reality.
The GRP outer skin won’t warp or fade under sun, wind and rain. The steel-reinforced frame stays square over decades, and high-performance seals around both panels keep draughts and water out even on exposed elevations.
The 44 mm door leaf has a solid GRP-skinned core that gives the door real heft when you close it. Thermally, it achieves U-values down to 0.86 W/m²K, the same standard as the rest of our composite door range. That means a stable door doesn’t compromise heat retention compared to a standard back door, despite splitting horizontally.
The traditional stable door splits horizontally just below the lock case, with hinges on one side and the latch on the other. The two halves can be operated independently or locked together to function as a single door.

Splitting the door horizontally doesn’t compromise security when properly engineered. Our stable doors come with Winkhaus or Yale multi-point locking systems on both sections, with the top and bottom locking together when the door is closed and the lock engaged. PAS 24 certification is available, and a 3-Star Ultion cylinder upgrade gives you the highest anti-snap rating on the market.
The reinforced steel frame and hinge bolts on both panels make the door at least as difficult to force as a standard composite back door. Smart lock options are available where you want keypad or app-controlled entry.
Family kitchens are the most common location. The split-leaf design lets you ventilate the room without leaving the whole doorway open, useful for cooking smells, summer heat or just letting fresh air through without committing to a fully open back door.
Utility rooms and boot rooms also work well. Pet owners particularly like the ability to keep the bottom locked while the top stays open, letting cats and small dogs see out without escape risk.
For country-style renovations, the stable door fits the aesthetic of a converted barn or cottage without sacrificing modern thermal and security performance. The traditional woodgrain finishes in Golden Oak or Light Oak read as authentic timber, while the build underneath is fully modern.
The full RAL colour palette is available, alongside the standard composite range. Chartwell Green, Anthracite Grey, Black, Cream and Traditional Red are popular for stable door installations specifically, with Golden Oak and Light Oak the most-requested woodgrain effects.
Dual-colour finishes let you have one shade outside (often a heritage colour to suit the property style) and a different shade inside (often a lighter tone to keep the kitchen feeling bright). The internal woodgrain options work well for converted properties where you want the inside to read as traditional timber.
Hardware comes in chrome, satin steel, black, antique brass, gold or brushed nickel finishes across handles, knockers and decorative furniture. Smart lock and keypad options are available where you want app-controlled or keyless entry on the main locking mechanism.
The split-leaf action is one of those things that’s easier to understand in person than in a catalogue. Operating both halves, feeling how they latch together, and seeing the seal between top and bottom panels all matter once you’ve got the door in your hand. Fitted composite stable doors with us typically run between £1,500 and £3,000 depending on size, glazing, hardware spec and colour. The split-leaf design adds modestly to the price compared to a standard composite back door, but most of the cost is in the door material and locking spec rather than the configuration itself.
Usually yes. The standard back door opening size matches stable door dimensions in most cases, so a like-for-like swap is straightforward. We'll check the frame and structural opening during the survey to confirm whether any adjustments are needed.

Manufacturing on a composite stable door typically takes around 5 weeks once the order is confirmed. Installation is usually a one-day job, with the same crew handling removal of the existing back door, frame preparation, fitting both leaves of the new door, sealing, and disposal of the old door.
